NEWS FROM SUFFRAGE WAGON NEWS CHANNEL:

Interest is increasing from around the nation by women planning to run for the U.S. House of Representatives. Many of these candidates are focusing on health care, education, early childhood development, family leave, and workplace equality.

This year is the 170th anniversary of the 1848 women’s rights convention held in Seneca Falls, New York. Keep this in mind when planning your summer and fall holidays.

A petition with hundreds of names of Long Island, NY residents has been sent to Albany, NY in support of the New York State Museum placing the “Spirit of 1776” suffrage campaign wagon used by Edna Kearns on permanent exhibit. The Suffolk County Historical Society has been featuring an exhibit about Long island suffrage activists, and the petition was circulated for Long Island residents to sign.

A monthly listserv announcement is sent to subscribers interested in the 2020 suffrage centennial planning. Contact Suffrage2020@thezahnisers.com for more information. Visit the web site—2020centennial.org— for information postings and special events.

Contact your state legislators about a suffrage commission in your state. Even without funding, the existence of such a commission for 2020 is important.

FROM MARGUERITE KEARNS:

I have been putting together the story of my grandparents, Edna and Wilmer Kearns, since I started blogging for SuffrageWagon.org in 2009. In part, the blogging was an excuse to immerse myself in history. It was also a way to come to terms with being the descendant of early 20th century activists.

Just as my grandparents stepped forward to leave behind a record for me, I now am in the last stages of writing about how my life has intersected with their’s. They demonstrated the importance of taking a stand about injustice and human rights. I follow in their footsteps. They advocated for the right to vote and the expansion of human rights for everyone. I follow in their footsteps.
