Our special program at Suffrage Wagon Cafe features the first woman reporter on the moon and a performance by Gerri Gribi of the vintage song, “Oh, dear, what can the matter be?” to accompany vintage photos in the public domain from the first wave of the women’s rights movement. This is in preparation for celebrating 100 years of women voting in the US. There have been fat least three waves of this movement. Some are now referring to the fourth and fifth wave.

Each wave has a special and much-needed focus, especially at a moment in time when it’s appropriate to ask the question—Did all the blood, sweat, and tears of the women’s suffrage movement deliver a fair and honest system of conducting elections?

The news is full of questions about moves to establish restrictions on voting rights, purge voter rolls, and redraw political boundaries to benefit one special interest or another.

Whatever perspective you hold dear, it is increasingly clear that the combined effort of generations of women and their men allies isn’t something to dismiss as insignificant. We remember our history because of the effort and sacrifices of millions of US citizens. Celebrate women’s freedom to vote. This right wasn’t handed over willingly. It represents the efforts of many. And our collective effort is increasingly important.
