Long Island women’s suffrage activists featured in an exhibit!  on Vimeo.

Edna Kearns is featured in an exhibit of Long Island suffrage activists that continues at the Suffolk County Historical Society, 300 West Main Street, Riverhead, NY. A petition gathered during 2017, NY’s suffrage centennial, has been sent to officials in Albany, NY supporting the New York State Museum in putting the “Spirit of 1776” suffrage campaign wagon on exhibit. Wendy Polhemus-Annibel is the head Suffolk County research librarian coordinating the exhibition. She had this to say about the exhibit and petition: “We will continue to collect petition signatures during the ongoing display of our ‘Votes for Women’ centennial exhibit. This effort has been a popular component to the exhibit.”

Marguerite Kearns has been busy writing the story of Edna Kearns and Wilmer Kearns, her grandparents, in the context of her own life. Edna and Wilmer seemingly are from very different backgrounds when they meet in 1903. She’s from a Philadelphia Quaker family. Wilmer has been raised Lutheran in Pennsylvania Dutch country. Her ancestors have lived a life of nonviolence. His ancestors fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. The author brings the past, present, and future together in a coming of age story that impacts her life.
