VIDEO SPECIAL:

Reporter Samantha Parker reminds us to see the “Spirit of 1776” suffrage wagon used by Edna Kearns before the “Votes for Women” exhibit at the New York State Museum closes on May 13, 2018. The suffrage wagon has been exhibited at the museum in 2010, 2012, and from 2017 to 2018. It was on display at the State Capitol building during March of 2017.

Plans are underway at the state museum to plan for 2020 when American women will have been voting for 100 years.

FROM MARGUERITE KEARNS:

I was ten years old when I started asking my grandfather Wilmer questions about my late grandmother Edna who died before my birth. Back then, the struggle of American women to win the right to vote wasn’t considered important. I learned only about men and war in American history in public school. This has changed dramatically since I started blogging about my grandparents in 2009.

The memoir I’m writing about Edna and Wilmer is based on a lifetime of being aware of the impact on me of being a suffrage activist descendant. Nailing down the details of a compelling coming of age story, I share the narrative of years of persisting when putting the pieces of my family history together to see the overview. I have discovered first hand how storytelling brings the past, present, and future together.
