Flash announcement of a date to celebrate the unveiling of a road marker on the main street of Huntington, NY related to the “Spirit of 1776” suffrage campaign wagon.

The event: Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at 12:30 p.m. on the main street of Huntington, NY. More details will follow this preliminary announcement. But if there is any way you can attend, mark your calendar now!

This roadside marker commemorates the July 1913 confrontation on the main street of Huntington, NY where a thousand people witnessed anti and pro suffragists clash over the “Spirit of 1776” campaign wagon. Edna Kearns, Serena Kearns, and Irene Davison were riding in the horse-drawn wagon when Mrs. Mary Jones, mother of Rosalie Jones, stopped the parade and confronted the activists abut their right to use the vehicle for votes for women campaign purposes.

The Long Island Woman Suffrage Association applied for the road marker from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. For more information, contact Antonia Petrash from the Long Island Woman Suffrage Association for additional details about the brief ceremony.

The wagon is on exhibit NOW through May 13, 2018 at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY. The artifact is in the front lobby of the museum, and it accompanies the Votes for Women centennial display on the first floor.

The unveiling of the historic roadside marker is scheduled on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 in Huntington, NY. More details will follow.
